In Development: Widget WordPress Theme

I admit I like to play around with creating various WordPress themes. Here’s a sneak peek of one I’m working on, which I plan to release for free in the coming months.

I think the most unique feature is that this will be a widget-ONLY theme (especially useful for an RSS aggregator-type site) for the homepage. I’m also working on creating a few different color options.

Hopefully releasing within the next month!

The (all-new) Good Designs

Hello, 2010!

I’ve been working on re-vamping the design of the site (as you can probably see). I was completely inspired by a ton of amazing portfolio blogs out there (especially these), but wanted to come up with something that I could use for a long time, and that matches my newly-updated resume. I did want to continue with the { as a design element, so you can see it here and there.

One thing you may notice is a near-daily posting of links to various articles and resources. These are the things I’m bookmarking and linking to in Delicious throughout the day. By the way, if you have a blog and use Delicious, check out their beta blog thing: you can have it auto-post to your blog!

Thanks,
Mary

New WordPress 2.8

11 Jun

So far, it’s nice. I am having problems installing widgets in a sidebar, but I’m wondering if it’s a problem with the widgets I’m installing, and not WordPress itself.

The new feature that I think most people will adore is the ability to install themes directly from your admin panel. 2.7 had the ability to do this for widgets and plugins, but you still had to use FTP or go through your host to upload a new theme. Not anymore! I would have loved this back when I first started using WordPress, and thus didn’t make my own themes. Of course, now it’s a rather moot point, but it’s still nice they’ve added it.

Check it out HERE.

WordPress: Working With Color

5 Jun

WordPress is BY FAR my favorite thing that has come out of the blogging phenomenon. With it being part blog, part content management system, you can do pretty much anything with it.

There are a lot of beautiful themes out there. So what do you do when you like a theme, but want to change the colors? Even worse, what if you don’t know CSS or know how to create a color scheme with hex codes?

Theme Tweaker

If you’re not familiar with CSS, this little plugin might be your best friend. The only complaint I would have is that it doesn’t tell you where the color is coming from, but I suppose that’s something that you might just have to deal with. If, say, you’re looking at your current layout, and want all the areas that are pink to become a certain orange color, that’d be an easy fix.

ColorSchemer

This one is great for every website, not just WordPress. I love this color generator. You can input a hex color code, and it will draw up complimentary colors with their codes for your website. You can darken or lighten the color scheme as well. You can also choose a color from one of the pre-chosen boxes, and find a good color scheme from there.

What are some of your favorite color tricks?
